GCA News October 2017

Hello Neighbors,

Your dedicated GCA board and block captains are wrapping up the 2017-2018 membership drive. Once everything is processed, the block captains will be coming back around with your Greenbriar Community Directory and GCA membership pride stickers. This year’s stickers will commemorate the 50-year anniversary of the incorporation of the Greenbriar Civic Association.

We are going to keep the good times rolling through 2018 with classes, parties, improvements and many other opportunities to celebrate and bring neighbors together.

We enjoyed an amazing block captain appreciation party in August. Our many friends in Greenbriar Town Center sponsored this annual event, held at the kickoff of our membership drive as a way to thank our block captains for all their work. Bone sh Grill, Buffalo Wing Factory, DogFish Head Alehouse, Giant, Lebanese Kitchen and Similans Thai Eatery provided a great sampling of food — and lots of it! Our sponsors made it possible to try some of the dishes that make them so popular while keeping our costs extremely low. We greatly appreciate the generosity and quality of these restaurants/stores.

There is now another way to support the GCA. Take your printing needs to the UPS Store in our Greenbriar Town Center. It’s as simple as this: Make copies, let them know you live in Greenbriar when you check out, and the UPS Store will donate 10 percent of the value of your bill to our civic association account! This will help the GCA keep our printing costs down so we can use that money for other community needs.

In late July, the GCA Facilities Committee held a Cale Community Center maintenance day to clean, paint and start repairs on our building. Some wonderful neighbors donated money to the cause, while others donated time and labor. Thanks to everyone who was involved, with an extra big thanks to Sam Axton of Sam I Am Your Handyman. Greenbriar resident and handyman extraordinaire, Sam repaired things we thought were a lost cause and let the team use and abuse his tools and ladders. (Sorry about all the paint I got on your ladder, Sam.)

Keep an eye on the two neighborhood entrances along Stringfellow Road. Beautiful, perennial, bee- friendly plants will brighten these areas soon.

If you still haven’t paid your membership dues, get them in soon so we can plan the upgrades and good times to come. Check out the events page on Nextdoor Greenbriar or the Cale Community Center calendar for more neighborhood fun. You don’t want to miss out on fun GCA-sponsored events, like hatha and chair yoga, trivia nights, or the Antique/Classic/Exotic Car Show.

Just a reminder … every year is an election year in Virginia. The final day to register to vote or update your voter information is October 16. See you at the polls November 7 when we pick a governor, lieutenant governor and House of Delegates representative.
