As much as I love Greenbriar in summer with all the neighbors’ butterfly bushes and crepe myrtles in bloom, fall in our community is lovely, too. And then there is the best part of the season — Halloween! It’s a lot of fun to see the monsters, superheroes and all the other great costumes. But as anyone who has lived in the neighborhood for a while can attest, there is no way to predict how many trick-or-treaters will be making the rounds. A neighbor recommended buying candy you like. Good advice!
There is a great tool on www.greenbriarfairfax.nextdoor.com that allows you to mark your house with a candy corn icon if you’ll be handing out candy. We used it last year, and I believe it directed a few more ghosts and ghouls our way.
Fall is also back-to-school time, and I hope everyone is off to a good start. It’s never too early to start planning what would look good on your GCA scholarship application. The scholarship committee looks for awards, extracurricular activities and volunteerism when evaluating the applications. Start planning now for your chance at $2,500 to put toward your education at an accredited school.
Your dedicated GCA board and block captains are wrapping up the 2016-2017 membership drive. If you haven’t yet paid your membership dues this year, please use the application on page 10 or go to the membership page on www.egreenbriar.org, complete the form and click on “Buy Now” to join through PayPal. But please don’t delay … we’ll be closing down this year’s membership drive within the next week or two.
Before too long, the block captains will be coming around with the new Greenbriar Directory and your GCA membership pride stickers. We can’t make anyone put the stickers on their cars (we aren’t some mean HOA after all), but seeing them may remind everyone to drive in a considerate and neighborly way since we can all readily be identi ed as neighbors! And I’m more than a little curious about what the lack of stickers will tell us about non-resident cut-through traf c.
Stay tuned for updates on the Greenbriar Town Center. The property management company is looking to improve access and add well-de ned crosswalks for a better, safer experience for all.
And for the last time, for this year at least, the nal day to register to vote or update your voter information is October 17. See you at the polls!
