It’s that wonderful time of year — lilacs in bloom, playoff hockey on TV, and the entire summer still before us — magical!
It’s also the right time of year to report needed road and sidewalk repairs to VDOT. Call 1-800-FOR-ROAD or use the site my.vdot.virginia.gov for service. This and other helpful information will be available on greenbriarfairfax.nextdoor.com. Search for a post named “Community Links.” As always, you can contact your district representative or me for assistance.
Fairfax County is using Nextdoor for community alerts and crime prevention/safety tips. Recently, the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD) was recognized as a leader in improving police/neighborhood communications using the private online network.
The Greenbriar Civic Association is on board with this program and uses our Nextdoor tool to communicate with FCPD Master Police Officer Wayne Twombly, who oversees crime prevention in Greenbriar. He has shared safety tips, scam alerts, self-defense classes, neighborhood watch training, county programs and so much more on the site. Officer Twombly is active online and in our community. He attended our April GCA board meeting and gave a brief rundown of Greenbriar crimes over the last six months. Brief indeed … the only activity reported multiple times was noise complaints. And, kind and considerate neighbors, we already talked about that, didn’t we …?
Of course, when you know your neighbors, the community is safer, kinder and more fun. I think that means I need to learn how to play Bunco. The May 23 GFWC Western Fairfax County Woman’s Club game night (see page 8 of the May Flyer) sounds like a really good time, and it will raise money for a good cause.
The GCA is still working on a series of events to bring folks together and celebrate the Greenbriar and GCA 50-year anniversaries. A couple of parties down, many to come. We are looking for ideas, events and volunteers that will bring residents together through the rest of 2017 and all of 2018. Looking for anything and everything that will give everyone a chance to meet and make new friends.
A great way to get involved and know community news and events first is to become a board member or block captain. Call, text, email or message me on Nextdoor and we’ll get you in the know.
Our June 6 GCA meeting is the big one! The 2017-18 GCA board will be elected and the Citizen-of-the- Year and GCA Scholarship awards will be presented to deserving members of our community. Come be part of the celebration.
Virginia election season begins in June, too. Yes, we have elections every single year in the commonwealth. This round will decide who ends up on our November ballot when we choose a governor, lieutenant governor and delegate. Primaries will be held on June 13. Check www.elections.virginia.gov for details.
As always, check greenbriarfairfax.nextdoor.com often for community events and information.
